Heavy Duty Vehicle with Liquid Hydrogen and Heat Exchangers and Fuel Cells
Liquid Hydrogen for Heavy Duty Vehicles

Scottish Enterprises - Heavy Duty Vehicles Zero Emission Challenge

We are considering the requirements for heavy duty vehicles and welcome your feedback on the requirements for a heat exchanger in your system.

  • Increased Load Capacity
  • The density of liquid hydrogen (10 bar, 31 K, 50 kg/m3) is about 2.2 times higher than that of 35 MPa high-pressure gas hydrogen (23 kg/m3) at room temperature, and 1.35 times that of 70 MPa gas hydrogen (37 kg/m3) at room temperature
  • Increased Range
  • The simulation results show that cold energy utilization ratio can keep at a high level except under extremely low ambient temperature and light load. Compared to the original LH2 system without cold energy utilisation, the total parasitic power consumption can be saved by up to 15% (namely 1.8 kW).
  • Fuel Cell Powering Heavy Duty Vehicles are Ranging from - 150kW-370kW are in production and technology roadmaps
We are interested to provide heat exchanging technology developing a light weight heat exchanger from aerospace to assist in the development of HDVs.
  • Liquid Hydrogen for Heavy Duty Vehicles is in progress of testing with some Truck manufacturers and we are interested to share our cyrogenic knowledge from superconducting motors with cryogenic cooling from the LH2 and managing temperature and heat transfer to achieve improved propulsion for zero emissions HDVs
  • Gaseous Hydrogen for Heavy Duty Vehicles are in place for scaling with a number of your current products, and we are interested to know more about the heat exchangers used, and needed for the future.

We believe on-board liquid hydrogen (LH2) with cold energy system can be useful for a heavy-duty fuel cell hybrid truck. Papers such as Yang, et al 2021 in World Electric Vehicle Journal suggest the benefits are two fold.
